Peppermint (Mentha × piperita)

Vigorous, cooling — grow it in a pot or it grows everywhere

🔍 How to identify it

Square purplish stems, opposite toothed lance-shaped leaves, sharp menthol scent; spreads aggressively by runners. Small mauve flower spikes.

👀 Look-alikes

All true mints (square stems, minty smell) are safe; the smell is the giveaway.

🤝 Companion planting

Plant near:
cabbagetomato
Keep apart:
other mints (they cross), chamomile
FamilyLamiaceae (mint family)
Hardiness zone3-11 (hardy, invasive)
SunSun to part shade
WaterLikes it moist
SoilRich, damp; tolerant
SpacingContain it! One pot or a sunk bucket
Sowing / startingPlant a division or rooted cutting — runners take over from seed
HarvestCut sprigs anytime; hardest cutback just before flowering keeps it leafy
Common pestsRust; otherwise pest-repellent (deters cabbage moth, ants, aphids).

🧺 What it's good for

Digestive and cooling tea; deters pests as a border. Keep it CONTAINED — it's invasive.

Plant identification here is educational — never eat, forage, or medicate with a wild plant on the basis of a website alone. Many edible plants have toxic look-alikes. When in doubt, grow from known seed, or confirm with an expert before you harvest.
